Sexually explicit lesbian novel The Color Purple taught at Holy Trinity #OCSB

There are SO many good books out there to teach. (http://www.ipnovels.com/novels/)

Yet, Holy Trinity has again chosen The Color Purple!! What makes this school one iota different than a public school?

Is this book chosen to promote EIE (equity and inclusive education) across the curriculum?

Equity across ALL curriculum

Please note that the movie is quite toned down from the book:

Steven Spielberg received severe criticism for toning down lesbian scenes inThe Color Purple because fans of Alice Walker‘s novel felt they should have been more explicit. The moviemaker admits he felt uncomfortable with the description of sex scenes between characters played by Whoopi Goldberg and Margaret Avery in the book, and chose to play the affair down in the film.”

After Celie tells Shug of her sad past and grieves over the painful memories, Shug comforts her by putting her arms around her and then kissing her. Celie responds and they make love. Walker makes the lesbian sex seem comfortable and natural, especially in contrast to the brutal sex that Celie has endured. In fact, it is a healing process for Celie.

“The story is written, in very visual language detail, regarding incest relationships, masturbation, lesbian attractions, vulgar language, and derogatory terms, to name a few of the topics.”

Dear Catholic parents,

The problem you have run into is all too common. I know that a number of times parents have complained to some of our English teachers about the kinds of books they are using with our Catholic youth. If the teacher would just have some common sense and a genuinely Catholic mindset there wouldn’t be any bad books chosen. The book you mentioned “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker, a militant lesbian, is indeed pornography and should never be read in any high school, public or private. You have every right to be morally indignant about having politically correct trash used in a purportedly Catholic school. There so many wonderful contemporary and classic Catholic novelists that could be used instead. …. You could also take a look at the Ignatius Press catalogue which has a fair amount of good Catholic literature”

PS:

The author is quite the nutbar.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Walker

In a June 2011 interview, Walker described the United States and Israel as “terrorist organizations“, stating “When you terrorize people, when you make them so afraid of you that they are just mentally and psychologically wounded for life — that’s terrorism.”Walker supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel. In 2012, Walker refused to authorize a Hebrew translation of her book The Color Purple, citing what she called Israel’s “apartheid state.”

This is how Alice Walker’s daughter describes her:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1021293/How-mothers-fanatical-feminist-views-tore-apart-daughter-The-Color-Purple-author.html

She’s revered as a trail-blazing feminist and author Alice Walker touched the lives of a generation of women. A champion of women’s rights, she has always argued that motherhood is a form of servitude. But one woman didn’t buy in to Alice’s beliefs  –  her daughter, Rebecca, 38.

Here the writer describes what it was like to grow up as the daughter of a cultural icon, and why she feels so blessed to be the sort of woman 64-year-old Alice despises  –  a mother.
